Why join?
Our lab is a diverse and multidisciplinary group of researchers at various stages of their academic careers. Our projects span passive mechanism design, mechatronic system development, controls, data-driven gait state estimation, biomechanics, qualitative assessments, and clinical processes. Before applying to join the lab, take some time to consider what interests you at both a high level (what problems do you want to solve) as well as at a low level (are you more likely to enter a “flow state” in CAD, coding, reading the literature?) What are you able to bring to the lab, and why are you interested in joining?
Prospective PhD Students
PhD students are the backbone of our research lab, and we are almost always looking for talented students to join our team. I encourage applicants to reach out via email prior to formally applying, and I may be able to discuss potential fit and provide recommendations on your application. Please include your resume or CV in this email, as well as a short description of your research experiences and interests. Unfortunately, due to the volume of inquiries throughout the year, I am unable to respond to all inquiries. I will closely review the formally submitted applications in January/February, and meet with students during Northeastern MIE’s graduate recruitment day, typically early February. I plan on recruiting 1-2 Mechanical Engineering PhD student into the lab in Fall 2025.
MS Students
We select 2-3 MS students per year to do a Thesis project, typically from Mechanical Engineering, ECE, or Robotics. A Thesis involves two thesis courses, but given the time required to successfully complete a Thesis, interested students will need to start early (ideally their first semester). Typically, the project starts with a 1-semester trial period before both parties commit to a full thesis. These projects are not funded (no RAships available), but a small amount of money is set aside for materials and supplies to support the project. Here is the Application Link. Please note–we get many requests, so do take the application seriously, as this is a chance to show your skills and enthusiasm for research! Note: For senior undergraduates with relevant research experience who are trying to select an MS program based on possible thesis options, please feel free to reach out to me directly.
Undergraduate Students
We select 2-3 highly motivated, curious, and independent undergraduate students (often freshmen/sophomores) per year to join our lab. We will typically start with a 1-semester trial period working with a graduate student mentor, and successful students may eventually transition to leading their own project. Students can participate as volunteers, for course credit, or as part of fellowships; be sure to check out opportunities for fellowships. Please note–to get a good experience, undergraduate students should plan to spend at least 10 hours per week as members of the lab, otherwise we’ve found it’s very hard to stay caught up. Here is the Application Link. Please note–we get many requests, so do take the application seriously, as this is a chance to show your skills and enthusiasm for research! In particular, we place a large emphasis on side projects, even if not directly relevant to our research, as they are an excellent indicator of independence–show them off!
